Using Dr. is appropriate before your name and not PhD. PhD is a doctoral degree that you receive upon the completion of your original research work which establishes your theories, officially. Dr is, whereas a title that is used before your name. It only belongs to people who are either Doctors, someone who has completed their PhD, i.e., original research work or someone who have an Honorary Doctorate degree.
