Who is eligible for a PhD?

Most Indian universities follow similar rules for PhD entry, thanks to UGC guidelines. Usually, a post-graduation degree is required to apply. Degrees like MA, M.Sc., M.Com, MBA, MTech, M.Ed., M.Phil., LL.M, or P.G.D.M count toward eligibility. Other approved master-level qualifications also work. The minimum marks needed depend on the applicant’s category. Though exact scores differ, they’re set by university norms. Take General Category candidates. They need at least 55 percent overall in their postgraduate studies. The same goes for those under OBC without creamy layer status. Now shift to SC, ST, or PWD groups. Their required mark drops slightly – just fifty out of a hundred. Even OBC folks marked as a creamy layer fall into this lower bracket. Each group meets different thresholds, yet all aim at the same finish line. 

Should the school count as a PGDM as equal to an MBA, Doctoral programs in management often admit those who completed AICTE-approved diplomas. Admission hinges on how the university views that qualification. Some institutions open their PhD courses only when they recognize the degree of equivalency. Without such recognition, entry remains blocked. Each college sets its own rules about which credentials qualify. 

Starting fresh, those scoring seventy-five percent or higher in a four-year honors or research-based bachelor’s program – built under NEP 2020 – can enter PhD programs straight away, even without a master’s, thanks to UGC guidelines from 2022. Still, not every university has switched to this setup yet. 

PhD entries often hinge on more than just degrees. Passing an entrance test sits high on most university checklists. National gateways like UGC NET/JRF, CSIR NET, GATE, and SLET open doors widely. Not every path runs through those though. BHU sets its own bar, so does JNU. AMU holds separate screenings too. Hyderabad’s Osmania University follows a similar route.
