What is National Education Policy 2025? 

National Education Policy 2025 is introduced as a transformative framework; it aims at revamping the India education system. In December 2024, there was a significant change, and it was implemented regarding the detention policy for the students in class 5th and 8th.  The detention policy was reintroduced under the Right to Education Act, 2009. This act has prohibited schools from failing the students till class 8th, regardless of academic performance. From December 2024, government of India has abolished and scrapped this policy. Candidates who fail the 5th and 8th class examinations must appear for retest examination within 2 months. If they did not clear the retest examination, they will have to repeat the same grade.

  • One of the main features of NEP policy is the universalization of early childhood care and education. This policy puts more emphasis on the importance of childhood education and lays the foundation for lifelong learning and development. The main aim of this policy is that all the children between the ages of 3 to 6 years must have the access to preschool-quality education. This also includes Anganwadi centers and Pre primary schools.  
  • The second most important feature is achieving literacy and numeracy by class 3 is one of the most top priorities of NEP 2020. This policy recognizes the ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic is important for further learning. NEP 2025 proposes mission mode approach, focusing on intervations, teacher training and development of effective learning materials.  
  • NEP 2025 introduces a new structure known as 5+3+3+4 system , this will replace the traditional system. The new structure comprises of the following stages:  

Foundational stage: 3 years of preschool and 2 years of primary school 

Preparatory stage: Class 3 to 5  

Middle stage: Class 6 to 8  

Secondary stage: class 9 to 12  

Undergraduation: 3 to 4 years
