What is Qualification for a PhD?

A PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy, is the highest academic qualification in the Indian education system. Under the National Higher Education Qualification Framework (NHEQF), a PhD sits at Level 10 at the topmost level above all undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and PGD qualifications. It is a research degree, not a taught degree, which means it is earned through original research rather than attending classes and writing exams alone.

To receive a PhD degree, you must produce a thesis in a structured document presenting your research question, methodology, findings, and conclusions. The thesis is evaluated by external examiners who are experts in your subject. After a positive evaluation, you defend your work in a viva voce before a panel of academics. Only after clearing this final stage is the PhD degree awarded.

In terms of academic hierarchy, the PhD course comes after the master’s degree. The standard progression is: 10+2 → Bachelor’s (3 or 4 years) → Master’s or PGDM (2 years) → PhD (3–5 years). Some students completed an MPhil before PhD, though UGC phased out MPhil programs from 2023 under NEP 2020.

A PhD is recognized by all universities, government bodies, and research institutions across India. It is required for Assistant Professor appointments at central universities and many state universities. It is also the standard qualification for senior research scientist positions at CSIR labs, ICAR, ICMR, DRDO, and similar organizations.

For PGDM and MBA holders who want to enter academia, a PhD is the natural next qualification. Without it, permanent faculty positions at most universities are not accessible.

Internationally, an Indian PhD from a recognized university is accepted by foreign universities and research institutions, equivalent to doctoral degrees awarded globally.
