Indians have achieved honorary degrees throughout history. The first Indian to receive an honorary degree in the United States was Swami Vivekananda, who received a doctor of laws degree from Harvard University in 1893. Since then, many other Indians have been awarded honorary degrees by universities around the world for their contributions to science, literature and culture. Many Indians have been awarded Honorary degrees. The list also includes Amartya Sen, who was awarded an honorary degree from Harvard University in 1998 for his “eminent service to humanity.” He is also the first Asian and Indian to win the Nobel Prize in Economics.
