Yes, a PhD will make you a doctor – but a doctor of what? PhD full form is Doctor of Philosophy. It is the highest academic qualification that can be obtained from universities worldwide, including those in India. When you have completed your PhD (which takes several years) and received your PhD, then you will be able to use “Dr.” as a title preceding your name.

Historically, the term “doctor” was derived from the Latin word “docere”, which means “to teach.” In fact, historically speaking when someone received their doctorate they had become qualified to teach at the highest level. Today this still holds true. A person who has a PhD may seek employment as a faculty member at a university, as a senior researcher in both government and privately owned institutions, and/or lead to independent academic research.

In India, according to the UGC regulations, completion of a PhD is required for appointment as an Assistant Professor in central universities and many state universities. Most candidates pursuing a postgraduate degree — MA, M.Sc., MBA, M.Com., P.G.D.M., etc. — require a PhD for permanent academic appointments. As such, the PhD is considered one of the most prestigious degrees available within the areas of academics/research.

It is essential to note that a PhD is completely unrelated to an MBBS/MD. An MBBS/MD provides clinical experience and allows individuals to provide patient care while a PhD focuses solely upon generating new knowledge within the area of study. Both are distinct paths of education.

PhDs can be pursued in virtually every field – Management, Science, Engineering, Commerce, Social Work, Education, Law, Arts, etc. The “philosophy” part of the title of a PhD refers to the historical academic tradition of inquiry and critical thinking applied to research across all disciplines.

Therefore, if you are considering pursuing a career in academics/research after receiving your PG degree/PGDM, obtaining a PhD will open those opportunities.
