Why are PhD admissions considered difficult?

PhD admissions are considered difficult especially in India as there is a high competition between the candidates. One needs to have strong academic records, good research skills and clarity of where their interests lie. Clearing an entrance exam, preparing for interviews and research proposals are not easy. In addition to all this, limited seats, competition for funding and the need for a good supervisor leave no space for an easy process.
