A PhD year in India follows the academic calendar of the enrolling university, which typically runs from June or July to May of the following year. Unlike a regular PG degree or PGDM where each year has a fixed syllabus and term exams, a PhD year is structured around research milestones rather than semester papers.
In the first year of the PhD course, the focus is on coursework. Under UGC 2022 PhD regulations, all scholars must complete mandatory coursework covering research methodology, subject-specific advanced topics, and academic writing. Assessments are through internal evaluations, assignments, and a final coursework exam. Clearing coursework is a prerequisite before independent research can begin.
In the second year, you are expected to finalize your research topic, complete your literature review, define your methodology, and submit a detailed synopsis to your Research Advisory Committee (RAC). The RAC reviews and approves your research plan before you move forward.
From the second year onward, PhD scholars undergo annual progress reviews. You present your research progress to a committee that evaluates whether your work is on track. These are formal requirements missing or failing them delays the PhD degree.
Publication is now required at many universities before submission of thesis. Some institutions require at least one paper published or accepted in a UGC CARE-listed journal before the thesis is submitted.
The final PhD year involves completing the thesis, formatting, and proofreading before submission. After submission, the thesis is sent to external examiners for a process that takes 3 to 6 months. Once cleared, you appear for the viva voice.
Total PhD course duration from joining to degree certificate is typically 3 to 5 years. Aimlay can help you understand the exact timeline for your specific PhD program and discipline before you apply.
