What is an honorary doctorate?

An honorary degree is an academic award granted to an individual for achievements. The recipient does not have to be a PhD holder, and they don’t need to have been awarded a PhD from the university in question.

An honorary degree is given for specific reasons, such as being a leader within their field or making significant contributions to improving society.

In general, honorary degrees are awarded to those who have made significant contributions to their field and/or society. This is why many celebrities are given honorary doctorates—they’re often known for their work in entertainment but also for being good people (i.e., philanthropists).
