A thesis is a very complex piece of writing that needs a lot of research. It’s no wonder most students are confused about the number of words in a dissertation. 

The length of a dissertation varies between study level and country but is generally around 80,000 words, excluding the footnotes or the bibliography. The thesis is not to exceed 80,000 words or go below 60,000 words.
